우리는 또 집을 짓는다. 보편적인 가치와 일반화가 가져다주는 경제적 혜택, 편의, 안전 등의 보장에도 불구하고 사람들은 일탈을 꿈꾸고 때때로 불편하기 그지없는 집을 지으며 모험을 한다. 언제나 그래왔듯이 항상 ‘다른 집’을 탐구하고 갈망한다. 보편적인 패턴을 벗어나면 불편하다. 몸이 체득하고 기억하고 있는 방식이 아닌 낯설음은 편치 않다. 그런데 그 사실을 당연히 잘 알면서도 집을 짓는다.
Yes. We build houses again. Despite financial benefits, convenience, safety that generalization and universality can provide, people yet dream of, and search for deviant ways and dare to take risk of building houses. Doing something that is unfamiliar, out of pattern, atypical, it sure is inconvenient and uncomfortable. But, while being aware of it, people still build houses.
좋은 디자인이 당신을 편리하게 만들어 줄 것이라 기대라도 하는 것인가. 그리고 다른 기대도 숨겨져 있는 것인가. 당신은 머지 않아 곧 깨닫게 될 것이다. 건축은 즐거움이다. 건축가가 당신의 집에 숨겨놓은 그것을 발견하는 순간 그동안 잠깐 가졌던 불편함은 사라질 것이다. 당신으로 부터 얻게 되었던 영감으로 다른 공간, 다른 집이 탄생한다. 이제는 그 집이 놓여있는 지리적 이점보다, 편리함보다, “누가, 왜, 어떤 삶” 이 이곳에 머물러 있는지 집중하고 편안한 집을 꿈꿔보면 좋을 것이다.
Why, is it because they believe that it will still somehow make life even better? Or, is it because there are some hidden expectations from it? Once you start building a house, you will eventually realize why they do so. It is because architecture is joy. Once an architect discover the joy that is hidden in the house. All those discomforts and inconvenience that you had in building a house will soon disappear. And from your inspiration, one of a kind house will finally come into the world. Therefore, when you build a house, more than locational advantage, or convenience, which are typical elements for building a house.it will be better if you focus more on ‘who’ will live in the house, ‘why’ you want to build the house, and ‘what kind of life’, you expect from that house, and dream for a house that gives you true comfort.
건축가 이영재 (Youngjae LEE | 李咏宰) 는 경남 밀양 출생으로 경상대학교 건축공학과를 졸업하고 대학원에서 시공간개념에 관한 연구로 석사학위를 받았다. 가와건축, 노바건축, 공간건축에서 건축설계 실무를 하였으며, 2014년 건축사사무소 이인집단(異人集團)을 개설하여 작업하고 있다. 다른 사람의 존재와 더불어 행함을 바탕으로 출발하고픈 의지에서 이인(異人)이라 하였고, 다양성을 이해하고 존중할 줄 아는 자세로 건축에 접근하고 해법을 찾으려 하고 있다. 엉뚱 발랄하여도 진지하게 세상을 바라보는 마이너 건축가다.

Architect Youngjae Lee, graduated GSNU, earned masters degree by writing a dissertation on Space-time concept. He has architecture designing experiences at KAWA DESIGN, NOVA STUDIO, SPACE(空間), and opened an architecture office, ‘Design Company Others.A’ in 2014. The name “others” was made in his hope that process of building houses would be based on understanding and respecting diversity. Though he is lively and unexpected, he knows how to take life seriously. He is a minor architect.
